Around The Farm...
Speaking of rain, all this wetness has made the last few weeks of
catering very interesting. At one evening event for 200 people, the
red van was pulling out after the people were all served and got
stuck in the mud. A bunch of big guys had to come push us out!
Then, the wedding we did this weekend was under a tent, but the path
to get there was not. Jill and her crew got their exercise running
up and down the customer's hill as they built the SpringHouse
Harvest Table for the guests appetizer delight (which involves lots
and lots of crates of goodies and punch ingredients, etc.) Jill
said it was all worth it, though, because the bride and groom and
her parents were just thrilled with everything. The only snag was
that, on the way home, the van left with the purses (containing the
keys to their cars) of all the catering gals who drove right there,
so they had to flag down the van driver before he got too far down
the road!! Oh geez!
We've created a few new things in the middle of all the catering
crazies this month. Let me tell you about them...One thing we're
going to do new this summer is a Kids Kooking Kamp, August 4-8 for 7
to 12 year olds. (Are we crazy?)
Have a great July...maybe we'll see you at our Chicken Bar B Q on
July 4th or anytime. Come on out any night to help feed the baby
calf around 6 pm too. We love little helpers!

My Donny (8 year old) made me breakfast in bed for Mothers Day (which was
fabulous, by the way), and I realized that there are probably lots of kids
who would like to learn more about cooking from scratch. We'll hold the
class every morning 9 am to Noon that week, and the registration fee
includes a snack and lunch (they have to taste their creations, you
know!!) and lots of real hands-on cooking!! I'm really excited about this
new venture and am already perusing recipe books for great kid-friendly
recipes!
Our other novel specialty is our new ice cream concoction that we'll
introduce at the Fair this August. I'll leave you in suspense as to what
it's made of, but it's name is "Summer Sunset" (thanks to our creative Ellen
gal!)
We had so much fun at our Farm Heritage Day that we'd like to do another fun
festival type event-different from the Heritage day one-at the end of
September. Do you have any ideas of what would be fun to do at a September
festival on the farm (besides all our usual Fall Fun stuff!)?
E-mail at
springhousefamily@yahoo.com and let me know
what tickles your fancy for Fall.

Around The Farm...
Hello everybody! Wowee!! It was so nice to see so many of you at our
Farm Heritage Day on Saturday, May 24. We had so much fun, and I hope
you did too if you were here that day. If you missed our first ever
Farm Heritage Day, don't worry, we're going to do it every year on
Memorial Weekend Saturday, maybe even bigger and better! And we're
going to hold a similar event on the last weekend of September called
Fall Farm Harvest Day, so plan to join us when we kick off our October
events in the fall. But, let me tell you about the fun at Farm Heritage
Day 2008!
Under the big striped tent, we hosted 12 old-time crafters: leather
making, quilting, dried flower making, wood working and more. And, for
everyone ready to dig in to hands-on events, we had pottery making,
sheep shearing, butter making, ice cream churning, and dough kneading.
See Pictures.
Heading up the hill were five antique tractors that I saw lots of guests
inspecting and admiring-they were just beautiful! All day long, we had
live music playing (great bands) and also farm tours.
Let me tell you about the farm tour bus driving situation. Our original
thought was that families would want to drive over the hill to the farm
for their farm tour. But, on Friday, the day before, I realized that
folks were going to want to just come and stay put, once they got to the
event. So, I was really scrambling to come up with transportation from
The SpringHouse to the farm. God is good, and I was able to rent a
12-passenger van for the day (that hadn't been available an hour
before). I thought that van would be plenty of space-whew, was I
wrong! We had people lined up all day long to get the other side of the
farm for a tour!!! I definitely needed that Matthews bus I had thought
would be too big!! Katie and Maribeth gave tours nonstop for 6 hours to
at least 24 groups!! We had no idea that so many folks would be so
interested. It was great fun!!
|
And they were not
the only ones exhausted after the day...Alice the cow was mighty mad about
so many tours too! We've got big plans for next year to switch out cows and
tour guides and vehicles!Another fun part of the day
was the games. Jane told me the day before that she felt that
everything was all planned and accounted for except for the games and that
we just didn't have all the details worked out on the game part of the day.
Well...the games were so much fun anyway! We did ice cream eating contests
(3 of them), seed spitting contests (three also) and sack races. So many
kids (and big people too) joined in and laughed and had great old-fashioned
fun. I heard one young man tell his mom, "This is so fun! I never did any
of this before!" His mom replied so wisely, "This is what kids did before
video games!!" It was a blast!
John Hall of WORD-Fm was here 1 pm to 3 pm and folks seemed to enjoy meeting
him; I did too! I even put him to work during the ice cream eating contest
when I had to improvise and make more eye coverings from muslin material.
He was lots of fun and not afraid to jump in to whatever was going on at
that moment!
Thanks so much, if you were here, for coming and having fun and eating up a
storm (you kept our cooks hustling with their Haystack sandwiches and Farmer
Casserole and more, and they thrived on it!). We loved hosting you, and I
had to take two afternoon naps this week as a result of all the craziness.
Okay, we're lining up out there at The SpringHouse buffet. I'll talk to you
later. Maybe we'll see you for Father's Day or maybe we're catering your
next event-see you there!!
Love, Marcia
